Question by cliff: why do snooker commentators insist on using the term ‘careless’ whenever a player plays a poor shot?
it’s so rare for a snooker player these days to play a ‘careless’ shot. poor shots are most often down to other factors, such as pressure, or a simple lack of judgement; not due to a lack of care.

The commentators are aware that the players are amazing skilled in this sport and that if they concentrate, all of them can perform almost any shot. In this knowledge, they know that a snooker player shouldn’t ever play a bad shot, so when they do, it is easiest for them to put it down to “carelessness”. But you are right, it is normally for other reasons such as pressure.
